Why Health Care Should Be a Right and Not a Privilege in America

When a medical emergency strikes, the last thing anyone should worry about is how to pay for an ambulance ride. Yet, this is the harsh reality for many Americans. My uncle suffered a massive “widow maker” heart attack and couldn’t afford an ambulance, so he took an Uber to the emergency room instead. This story highlights a critical problem in the U.S. health care system: access to life-saving care often depends on your bank account. Health care must be a right, not a privilege.

The Cost Barrier in Medical Emergencies

Medical emergencies demand immediate action. Waiting or hesitating because of cost can mean the difference between life and death. Ambulance rides alone can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Many people avoid calling 911 or using emergency services because they fear the bills that follow.

  • Ambulance costs vary widely but average around $450 to $1,200 per ride.

  • Insurance often covers only part of the cost, leaving patients with large out-of-pocket expenses.

  • People without insurance face the full cost, sometimes leading to debt or bankruptcy.

This system punishes those who are already vulnerable. It creates a dangerous divide where only the wealthy can afford timely, quality care.

Universal Health Care as a Solution

Medicare for All or universal health care would remove this financial barrier. Everyone would have access to emergency services and ongoing care without worrying about cost. Countries with universal health care systems show better health outcomes and lower overall costs.

  • Universal coverage reduces emergency room overcrowding by encouraging preventive care.

  • It improves public health by ensuring everyone receives timely treatment.

  • It eliminates surprise medical bills that cause financial hardship.

Health care is a basic human need. Treating it as a right means valuing human life over profit.

Supporting Families Beyond Health Care

Health care is just one part of what families need to thrive. Universal child care is essential so parents don’t have to choose between work and their child’s safety. Affordable housing must expand so families can stay in their communities without being priced out.

  • Child care supports working parents and promotes early childhood development.

  • Stable housing improves health outcomes and educational success.

  • Humane immigration reform keeps families together and protects communities from fear.

These policies work together to build stronger, healthier communities where everyone has a chance to succeed.

Justice and Equality in Health and Beyond

Expanding the Supreme Court and federal appeals courts can help ensure civil rights protections keep pace with a changing nation. Reinstating Roe v. Wade and protecting LGBTQ+ rights guarantee control over one’s body and identity without government interference.

  • A fair justice system protects vulnerable groups.

  • Reproductive rights are essential to personal freedom and health.

  • LGBTQ+ protections promote dignity and equal treatment.

Justice and health care are connected. Both require fairness and respect for human dignity.

Transportation, Education, and Economic Support

Affordable, reliable transportation connects people to jobs, education, and health care. A district-wide light rail line and expanded public transit reduce barriers to opportunity. Free community college and student debt relief open doors to education without lifelong financial burdens.

  • Public transit reduces commute times and costs.

  • Education access improves job prospects and economic mobility.

  • Small business tax reform supports local economies and job creation.

These investments strengthen communities and help individuals build better futures.

Health care should never be a privilege reserved for those who can afford it. It is a fundamental right that supports life, dignity, and opportunity. When we ensure access to health care, child care, housing, justice, transportation, and education, we build a society where everyone can thrive. The story of my uncle is a reminder that no one should have to risk their life or financial security to get emergency care. It’s time to make health care a right for all Americans.

If you believe in a fairer system, consider supporting policies that expand access to health care and other essential services. Together, we can create a future where no one has to choose between their health and their wallet.
